Without fail I can rarely say the words, “I’m an author” without being bombarded with questions. So I have decided to do a series on my blog about what goes into a novel. Keep in mind, some of this is specific to me, but some isn’t. Many of the things listed below are challenges and struggles or moments of brilliance all writers face.
The following in a working list of what I’ll post about. As I make the posts, I’ll embed the link. If there is no link, then I haven’t posted on it yet. Of course the list is tentative and subject to change by either having things added or removed.
Writing:
- Plot and Character Ideas
- Research
- Making it all work–from the first sentence to the last
- When things fall to crap
- Grrr why don’t they just TALK! AKA the “misunderstanding” plot device and why it might frustrate you to read, but would frustrate you even more if it was nonexistent
- But that’s wrong! You cannot start a sentence with the words: but, and, or because. Defining your voice and daring to break “the rules”
Editing:
- From first draft to “final” copy–the 10-step process
- Formatting errors: is the problem with the file or the eReader?
The Making of a Series:
- Ideas for a series and keeping the underlying storylines moving
- Organization of facts about other family members
- When a series grows and spawns
Misc:
- Picking Titles & Finding Covers
- Getting a book to Amazon/B&N
- Making changes after the book is live
- The dreaded writer’s block
- Pricing and Expenses
- What’s an ARC?
- Handling criticism
- Etiquette: the unspoken rules
- Pen Names vs. Real Names
- Things that make authors go “Huh?”
